Update: March Rapes and Eddy Sanchez Beating

We have an update for you on two criminal cases in the neighborhood.

Last spring The Local reported on the arrest of 27-year old Fort Greene resident Dupree Nicholson and his subsequent indictment on multiple counts of rape and assault.  The charges are in connection with two rapes that occurred near John Hancock Playground in March of last year.

Mr. Nicholson’s case is still in pre-trial proceedings and his next court appearance is tomorrow, March 1, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. Mr. Nicholson is being held at Rikers Island, the District Attorney’s spokesperson told The Local. Mr. Nicholson’s lawyer, Michael Warren, did not return calls requesting comment.

The Local also checked in on the cases against two teens charged in the attack on Pratt student Eddy Sanchez, who was beaten and robbed in August 2009. Eugene Adams and Deindaze Newell, who are now both 18, were arrested and charged in connection with the crime. Both have been remanded at Rikers Island without bail, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office. They are scheduled to appear at a pre-trial meeting on March 15, their lawyers said.

Alexandra Tseitlin, Mr. Newell’s attorney, said the meeting is a status conference with the judge and representatives from the District Attorney’s office to discuss the issues of the case. “We are thinking of going to trial at this point,” she said.

Mr. Adams’ attorney, Edward Mandery, said that there are plea offers in negotiation, but that his client does not intend to plead guilty at this time.

The Local will keep you updated on the proceedings. If there are any other stories you would like us to follow up on, please let us know in the comments below, or e-mail The Local at bklocal@nytimes.com.
